George III games table

Unknown maker

Primary wood: oak

27” high, 30” wide, 18¼” deep, 36½” deep with top extended

Ref. No. 100512_021

This games table with unusual configuration was likely made in the decade of the 1790s. The circular neoclassical pull quickly fell out of favor soon after its introduction in this decade, which serves as an aid in dating this table. A pull is missing and two later Victorian escutcheon plates have been removed at the lock sites. The fluting surrounding the edge of top does not extend into the rounded corner edge suggesting the possibility the corners were rounded at an early but post-manufacture date. The table retains what may be the original finish with rather even color including the rounded edges, and is in otherwise good order.
