American, probably 4th quarter of the 19th century

33¼" length from tips of tail and front right hoof; 18" high from front left ankle to rider's hat; approximately 3¼" wide at horse's breast

Hollow body copper pacing horse vane having a cast iron head with zinc and copper rider atop. Probably beginning service with a gilded surface, later with an old polychrome overpaint with verdigris peeking through the areas of working period paint loss.   Condition:   A few unobtrusive shallow dents and a puncture through the animal's left front hoof likely due to a 22-caliber bullet wound, otherwise fine with no evidence of repair or any missing element and displaying an exceptional color dynamic.
